SOUTH WEST ON SHOW AT NYISZTOR STUDIO
Patina is an exciting exhibition of recent works by South West artists Greg White and Patricia Hines.
Hines and White share a love of the natural environment that informs and inspires their individual art practice. The work of both artists feature richly developed surface texture and patina, from where the exhibition draws its name.
Hines has recently won awards at Melville, Albany and Mandurah. Trained at WAIT and the Gordon Institute of technology Geelong , she has acquired extensive experience as a textile artist and printmaker. Hines utalises these processes to produce evocative, highly layered images printed on canvas that capture the essence of her environment.
In 2007 Hines’ property near Dwellingup was destroyed by bush fire. Her experience of this dramatic event resonates strongly through-out her body of work.
White is a Bunbury based painter and curator. He has trained at Claremont School of Art, Edith Cowan and has recently gained a Masters degree from Monash University.
White’s work responds to the jarrah and karri forests of the deep South West. The landscape is interpreted with an eye to the abstract patterns and the subtle and ambiguous light conditions of the forest.White makes much use of natural materials collected from the forest, such as wax, resin and charcoal. The resins are dissolved and applied as either under painting or as layers of glaze. A process that draws from White’s experience of french polishing and restoring antique furniture.
The abstract patterning, materials and processes combine to give the paintings a raw earthy physicality while simultaneously being ethereal and ambiguous, much like the forest itself.
The work of Hines and White combine to provide the viewer with the beauty and experience of the South West landscape, but without the long drive.
Patina will be opened by Brian McKay at 6pm Friday 17 October at Nyisztor Studio, 391 Canning Highway Melville (Entry and parking off Stock Road) The Exhibition is open every day from 10 -5 until October 28.
